On Tuesday, January 12 2010, Haiti was hit by a catastrophic magnitude 7.0M earthquake. Port-au-Prince, Jacmel, and other major cities were devastated. The Haitian government estimated 316,000 people died; 300,000 had been injured, and another 1 million made homeless.
Cine Institute, a film school and arts incubator located in Jacmel, was not spared. Originally a film festival, Festival Film Jakmel demonstrated the power of film to tell a story, and quickly grew a film school recognized around the world.
The earthquake slowed, but didn’t stop, Cine Institute. The facilities were destroyed, but the students persevered. With a donation from the We Are the World Foundation, they were able to rebuild their facilities. The school’s on-going struggle came to the attention of a couple of independent filmmaker/adventurers: Charlie Boswell of AMD, and Justin Fornal, creator of “Bronx Flavor.” With sponsorship from AMD and donations of VEGAS Pro, Charlie and Justin visited Cine Institute and provided the students with the hardware and software they would need to continue creating and telling their individual stories to the world.
“Giving Voices” is the story of that trip, and the story of Cine Institute’s budding filmmakers coming together again to do what they love – tell their stories via films they have created with VEGAS Pro.
